Townsville was one of ten locations that the state government announced would have Cyclone shelters built in time for November 2012.
The cyclone shelter is to be built in Heatley by building contracor Baulderstone Queensland Pty Ltd.
Mr Finn said the $5.4 million cyclone shelter at Townsville was one of 10 cyclone shelters being constructed as part of the $60 million program jointly established by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the Bligh Government.
“I’m pleased to announce Baulderstone Queensland Pty Ltd has been selected to construct the Townsville cyclone shelter, which is due to be complete ahead of the 2012-13 cyclone season,” Mr Finn said.
Member for Townsville Mandy Johnstone said Baulderstone had an established office in Townsville, and had developed relationships with local subcontractors and suppliers.
“This is excellent news for those local subbies and suppliers – it will provide a welcome opportunity for work to flow to them,” Ms Johnstone said.
the cyclone shelters are due to be completed intime for the 2012-13 cyclone season. Queensland will have 14 buildings that are able to withstand category five cyclones at the project’s completion. Existing buildings are located at Cooktown, Kowanyama, Innisfail and Redlynch.
