Police are urging residents to ensure their property is fully secured to avoid any unwanted surprises over the holiday period.
Regional Crime Prevention Coordinator Senior Sergeant Steve Watterson said residents often became complacent securing their home this time of year because of the warmer weather.
“It is often the case during the summer months that doors and windows are left opened or unlocked giving offenders easy access to property,” Senior Sergeant Watterson said.
He said prevention techniques were the best way to protect your home and business against property theft.
“Many opportunist thieves are out to steal but have no specific target. They will most likely rob the first easy premises they come to. They enter through unlocked doors and windows, whether you are home or not,” he said.
“It is important that residents make it as difficult as possible for an offender to gain entry.
“This means ensuring doors are locked and windows are closed or locked when possible.
“Other prevention techniques include keeping lights on at night when you’re not there, keeping cash and valuables out of easy reach and installing quality locks on exterior doors and windows.”
Police encourage members of the public to actively watch for any suspicious people or activity in their neighbourhood.
