Lake Paluma to be reopened

Camping at Lake Paluma will be reopened to the public on Boxing Day after the popular area was cut off by rain and cyclone damage for almost a year.

Construction of a new bridge across Birthday Creek on the road to the dam was completed last month providing council crews with access for heavy machinery needed to clear hundreds of fallen and damaged trees from the camping area.

Health and Community Safety Committee chairman Cr Dale Last said campers could go on line from today to book camp sites at the popular retreat.

“The dam road and the original bridge were badly hit by the wet and particularly by Cyclone Yasi, and that made them unsafe for public access to the camp ground,” Cr Last said.

“Once the new bridge was built the council was able to get machinery in to the dam to clear away the huge amount of debris from the camp ground and get it back in shape for people to use.

“Paluma has always been a highly popular camping spot, particularly for families, and it’ll be great news to a lot of people that it’s up and running again.

“While the road has reopened people should drive with care when the conditions are wet.”

Around 22 camp sites are available. Bookings are essential and can be made on-line via the Council’s website.
