The Queensland Government has signed a major 10-year lease on a city office building known as the, “Verde building.”

Minister for Government Services and Building Industry Simon Finn said the new building would deliver a needed boost to the local construction industry and economy.

“The Bligh Government announced seven project ‘turbochargers’ in July to assist in the economic revitalisation of the Townsville region,” Mr Finn said.

“This included an initiative to locate all public servants within the Townsville region in the CBD.”

The new 11-storey office building is to be built at 435-453 Flinders Street and will encompass 10,000sqm of office space.

Local Member for Townsville Mandy Johnstone said she the project is a huge win for Townsville.

“Having a vibrant, thriving city heart is key to any modern city,” Ms Johnstone said.

“The State Government’s commitment to the CBD redevelopment through this tender process is further proof of Townsville’s status as Queensland’s second capital.”

“I want to see 30,000 people working or living in the CBD by 2030 and this office accommodation is a major step towards this goal.”

The construction of the office building is expected to take 18 months with construction beginning in March 2012.
