This morning many people in the Herbert and Lower Burdekin were awoken to an usually severe weather event.
Within the space of several hours most of Townsville received more than 100mm of rain almost the same amount of rain experienced in the month of November
Community Safety and Health Committee chairman Cr Dale Last said the thunderstorm should act as a reminder to residents to ensure they are prepared this wet season.
Cr Last said while many residents were “weather wary”, others may have become complacent following the city’s prolonged dry spell.
“People should take this morning’s downpour as a reminder that now is the time to be getting out and clearing your yard and getting up on the roof to clear gutters, make sure your emergency kit is prepared and you have a plan in place for all members of your family, including the furry four-legged ones” Cr Last said.
The rain also caused flooding throughout many low-lying parks and reserves as well as temporary road closures at Ingham Road at Blakey’s Crossing, Dalrymple Road at Bohle River and Queens Road.
“The city’s road network on the whole is designed to channel water away whenever flows exceed the capacity of the underground drainage system,” said Mr Last.
“In some older areas however, heavy periods of rain may caused short, localised flooding.
“Motorists should also remember to drive to the conditions and above all, slow down when the road is wet.”
