The children at the University of Melbourne’s Child Care Centre were treated to an afternoon with a former MasterChef, when Callum Hann dropped in for afternoon tea and a cooking master class last week.
Sharon Saitta, co-director of the child care centre says the kids were really looking forward to the visit. “The kids were beside themselves,” Ms Saitta said.
“Last year, when Callum was on TV, the staff noticed the children were playing ‘MasterChef’ in the sandpit, so we decided to integrate cooking classes into the play-based curriculum,” she said.
“As well as regular cooking classes, the teachers have introduced a food education program and even a ‘mystery box challenge’.”
“Through our MasterChef-style classes we’re trying to teach life skills, and the kids have really responded to it,” Ms Saitta said.
The child care centre is also taking part in Wesley’s Food For Families Appeal, which collects non perishable food and toiletries donations for homeless and disadvantaged families in the lead up to Christmas.
Callum, who is the ambassador for the Appeal, says it’s inspiring to see children making a difference to those less fortunate.
