South East Queensland’s koalas have a bright future with the planting of 30,000 trees and purchase of 379 hectares of land for protected koala habitat across the region.

Environment Minister Vicky Darling was joined by Member for Springwood Barbara Stone to plant the last of the 30,000 trees on revegetated farming land at the Daisy Hill on Brisbane’s southside.

The Queensland Government said they have allocated $48 million over 6 years to buy land for protected koala habitat.

“The Daisy Hill property was purchased last year and the planting of the final 30,000 tree is an important milestone in delivering necessary food and shelter for Queensland’s vulnerable koala population,” said Ms Darling.

“The eight land purchases delivers on the Bligh Government’s commitment to achieve a net gain in koala habitat by 2020.”

The state government outlined that they were serious about “ensuring the survival of koalas in South East Queensland for years to come”.

“Six properties have just been added taking the total to eight properties dedicated to protecting Queensland’s vulnerable koala population,” said Ms Darling.
