The stage one opening of a revamped Stockland Townsville shopping centre has officially opened today.

The opening of stage one is known as the Woolworths and Fresh Food precinct which includes several specialty stores and a new 4,200 sq m Woolworths.

There are 12 new retail stores that have opened which include an ice-creamery, a healthy life store and many other new and existing retailers to keep customers happy.

A shopper Kimberly Heartfield who regularly shops at Stockland visited the new area for the first time today and said “it’s been great, beautiful”.

Woolworths Aitkenvale Manager Clayton Linning said the new store is one of the biggest in Australia and will be convenient for many shoppers.

“The store is 4,200 sq metres. Which is on the larger side of any Woolworths store that has opened in Australia,” said Mr Linning.

Mr Linning also said the concept Woolworths store ties in with the shop’s new iPhone app which makes shopping easy for technology enthusiasts.

“We have the latest online shopping maps where you can do your shopping online. As your walking around the store you are able to go on your phone and shop the isles which makes finding items easy.”

Stockland Townsville, Retail Manager Debi Tolcher said the development consists of three parts with stage two expected to open in April 2012.

“The stage two opening includes a Myer and high-end fashion mall with a 750-seat food court, while stage three will include fashion and general merchandise stores,” said Ms Tolcher.

The official opening of stage one will be continuing until Saturday with giveaways and an appearance from celebrity Chef Ben O’Donoghue on Saturday. More information can be found at the Stockland Townsville website.
