Icon Ipswich redevelopment begins

Today the first sod was turned at ‘Icon Ipswich’, the first stage of the Ipswich City Heart Redevelopment scheme.

Government Services and Building Industry Simon Finn said 1,200 public servants would relocate to Icon Ipswich from the Brisbane CBD in 2013.

“The development of Icon Ipswich is evidence of our commitment to decentralisation, to the people of Ipswich, and to the city’s future prosperity,” Mr Finn said.

This move comes after the Department of Public Works signed a lease with Ipswich City Properties and a properties group for a 15, 000 square metres of office accommodation.

“This is an investment in the Ipswich economy of $190 million over the next 15 years which will provide better government services for Ipswich residents and lasting economic benefits for the city.

“This building will accommodate a range of government functions as well as a Government Customer Service Centre and retail outlets at street level.

“The Service Centre will provide the local community with services such as license renewals, payment of accounts and accessible information about government services and programs.”

He also said the development will be environmentally sustainable with the building targeting a 5 Star Green rating.
