Summer Beach Safety

With summer officially beginning today and the holiday season just around the corner, Australia’s beaches will be inundated with visitors over the coming months. Surf lifesavers around the country are urging beachgoers to stay safe at the beach and always swim between the red and yellow flags.

Anthony Bradstreet, Surf Life Saving Australia Public Safety Education Coordinator, reiterated how important it is to have fun and be safe at the beach and follow the instructions of surf lifesavers.

“Many Australians and international visitors plan to spend time at the beach over summer,” he said.

“We have over 44,000 highly trained surf lifesavers and lifeguards ensuring the safety of beachgoers around the country, however we need people to be aware of rip currents and other hazards at the beach.”

Whilst recent figures from Surf Life Saving Australia show that the 61 coastal drowning deaths during the 2010/11 season are less than the seven year average of 89, surf lifesavers say beachgoers should not to be complacent.

“We would also like to remind parents to make sure their children are aware of the red and yellow flags and how to call for help if it is needed.”

Follow these five simple beach safety messages.

  1. Always swim between the red and yellow flags.
  2. Read the safety signs.
  3. Ask a lifesaver for safety advice.
  4. Swim with a friend.
  5. If you need help, stay calm and attract attention.
